MotherSHOP: The Bristol Bike Project

As the last DIY event at SHOP in February, MotherSHOP this week is: The Bristol Bike Project.

The Bristol Bike Project is a volunteer-run, community bike project that repairs and recycles unwanted bicycles in order to provide free bikes to underprivileged groups in Bristol. The T-shirt has been designed and produced to help the project.
The T-shirts are in organic cotton and are made and printed by howies.
So far, only 30 have been made, Bristol Bike Project has given 12 to its volunteers and the rest are available for you at SHOP!

New Stuff!

SHOP got some presents today. Loads of new women's clothing, plenty of men's and some choice pieces of homeware too. Lucky, lucky SHOP.

WorkSHOP: Who Got Knitted?

Saturday was another especially lovely day at SHOP towers with our Knitting WorkSHOP run by Shop Club member and all round stitching expert Anne Wilson. Two beginners now have woolly hearts and another attendee finished off two scarves that had been hanging around the house for way too long. All those people who missed out but wished to attend, fear not as this will hopefully become a more regular event in the future!

Women Talk.....

SHOP's first Women Talk evening was a great success despite the attendance of........a man!

It was a lovely, informal evening with not the slightest mention of shoes, chocolate or housework. As all those who attended enjoyed it so much we are hoping that it will become a regular event on our calendar.

(House rules concerning the future attendance of 'men' are under review)

3 Events at SHOP This Week!

There are three very lovely and very different events for you at SHOP this week! As we are so jam packed this month we weren't able to put all the details in the Newsletter, so here's a wee update:

WEDNESDAY
7.30pm - Discuss it Yourself: Women Talk
This event came about from a Shop Club member noticing that she didn't often get the chance to talk just with other women about, well anything that came into their minds. So this event is about making some space for just that. Sorry chaplettes, women only.

THURSDAY
7.30pm - Fillum Club, Part 1: 'If you have a camera, make a movie.'
As part of DIY month at SHOP, the first Fillum Club this month features three shorts from cinema's DIY genius GEORGE KUCHAR, plus Sadie Benning's three shorts taken on a Fisher Price PixelVision! Before coming to Fillum Club, new film genius and Fillum Club boss Tara Judah recommends watching this:

It's an interview with George Kuchar that really pinpoints the whole idea of the events.

See the poster below for the full running order for Thursday and for part two on the 18th February. Tea, coffee popcorn all for you, but please BYO booze or anything that isn't tea, coffee or popcorn.

SATURDAY
12pm - 5pm Make It Yourself: Valentine's Baking Extravaganza!

This Valentine's Day get your loved ones something made with love. You will have two options at SHOP. Lynda Marshall, baker extraordinaire of over 40 years experience will be demonstrating in SHOP some simple baked gifts which you can impress your loved ones with and Bianca Soucek of the delicious blog 'with a pinch of salt' will be decorating individual cupcakes complete with recipe card for you to take home and give to those loved ones which you may not want to poison with your own efforts.

Tee hee. SHOP is sure you are all more than competent at anything you wish to undertake, which is of course the whole point of DIY MONTH!

Good news at the C.S.A.Q AGM.

At the Christmas Steps Arts Quarter Traders and Residents AGM last night SHOP's Jayne was voted in unanimously as the Co-Chair for the Association!

Previous Chair Daniel Penfold who has done so much towards the recent improvements in the associations activities has taken a side step to share the seat with Jayne.

Having already been responsible for resurrecting the area Newsletter and setting up the Artisan Market (amongst many other things), Jayne is the perfect person to help take the Association forward into 2010. SHOP is extremely proud of her.

That wasn't the only good news to come out of the evening of elections. Three female members in total were elected in to positions and three male members, which makes C.S.A.Q officially a gender-led association!

Frame Amnesty off to a good start!

SHOP volunteers donated 8 frames to the amnesty yesterday and today Shop Club member, Geri donated not 1 not 2, but 12 assorted frames! Thank you, Geri!

FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

February, the month of Love and in keeping with a certain kind of love, SHOP now has a red light bulb… not really, they just didn’t have any clear ones at Wilko’s. Wait, how unromantic of SHOP! Seriously. Actually, we are very affectionate round here, so we wish you a love-ly month and in keeping with it we have themed February with a subject totally unrelated to Love – it is DIY Month at SHOP .

NEWS

24 Hour Drawathon – Review
The Drawathon was more like a funathon, the combination of lack of sleep and energy bars causing much delirium inspired mirth. That aside, it was also very productive, with one drawerer creating a couple of one-panel ‘quips’, followed by a few five-panel regulars, to the finale of a fifteen-panel mini-epic. How’s about that?! Check out the January blog for hour by hour photos and some pics of the pics.

Frame Amnesty
As SHOP will be having monthly changing exhibitions from now on and as many artists are very poor and live in garrets and eat gruel, we are asking you lovely SHOP clubbers - if there are any unwanted frames lurking in your abodes, that SHOP can have them so that they can be used to frame all the lovely work from all the lovely artists.

SHOP’s Advisory Board
The first SHOP Advisory Board meeting took place in January and it was very productive - SHOP is so lucky to have such a wonderful, clever and enthusiastic board. They had loads of great ideas for new events at SHOP, as well as for ways of making SHOP bigger and better. If you would like to find out more about becoming part of the Advisory Board, drop us a mail, or have a look at the website:

Hot SHOP Birthdays
Happy Birthday to Hot SHOP Members who have birthdays this month, Happy Burpdays to Becky, Micheal and Elly! Wishing you cake and presents and a happy year ahead.

EVENTS
The theme this month is Do It Yourself and accordingly we have lots of ace hands on events for you.

Exhibition: Draw It Yourself
The exhibition this month will be displaying the spoils from the Draw It Yourself box which has been in-situ at SHOP through January, as well as from the Drawathon. The box will stay put so you can pop in and DIY all month. The exhibition will change to incorporate new drawings as they come in.
1st – 27th February
11am – 7pm (excluding Sundays)

Film Nights: DIY films
SHOP has decided to hand over the reigns of fillum club to a bonefide expert! From now on expect extra-super-duper-pumped-up Film Nights. General film genius, writer, blogger and fan, Tara Judah will be taking over from now on and to start she is serving up a host of DIY heroes. Expect discussion, handouts, surprise gifts and the possibility of an excursion! More details on the website/blog/twitter etc soon!

Thursday 11th February and 18th Febraury
7.30pm onwards
Colin, a Zombie filmed made on the budget of $70 and an evening of short films featuring the films of George and Mike Kucher amongst others.

WorkSHOPs
Fancy Doing It Yourself by learning a new skill this month? You like that? Well, SHOP has two for you:

Saturday 13th February
Valentines Baking Demo and Sale
12pm – 5pm
Want to make your chosen one something tasty for Valentine’s Day? Well, come to SHOP and learn how via a live demonstration with an expert, or pick up a homemade recipe card to take home and spill flour all over in the privacy of your own kitchen. Don’t feel up to making it yourself? Well purchase some hand baked goodies, ready made with love courtesy of the kitchen goddess behind truly tasty ‘with a pinch of salt’ blog.

Saturday 20th February
Get Knitted
12pm – 5pm
If you fancy learning to knit, then SHOP has the event to help you do just that. If you already knit but would like to do a bit of knitting with like minded others and share tips , then we’ll be running individual workshops throughout the day on the 20th as well as just sitting and knitting. Get in touch to reserve your place, or look out for more information nearer the time.

MotherSHOP
Saturday 27th February
The Bristol Bike Project
11am – 7pm
SHOP-per and super-cyclist (we’re sure he has many other identifying features besides), Nick Hand, has designed some lovely tee shirts for the Bristol Bike Project, a charity that helps children who wouldn't be able to have a bike, build one. It supplies all the bits and the expertise and the kids cycle their self-built bikes home at the end of the day. How good is that? And what’s more the tee shirts are dead good too.

Where’s the love?

February Fillum Clubs

DIY Themed Film Nights this month are courtesy of SHOPs new 'Fillum Club Manger' and general film expert, Tara Judah
