PHOTOMARATHON!

12 HOURS. 12 TOPICS. 12 PHOTOS

This May, SHOP is organising a 12 hour Photomarathon, one of the biggest events SHOP has hosted and the central focus of Photography Month at SHOP.

Starting at 10am on Saturday the 15th May at 19 Christmas Steps, all you need is a 35mm film camera (SLR, disposable, or compact), a roll of 35mm film, and your creative hat on!

You get 12 hours to take 12 photos on 12 topics that will be disclosed to you on the day.

SHOP develops the film and your photos will be displayed in a SHOP exhibition throughout May.

A selection of photos will be enlarged and printed onto the wall of the Christmas Steps as part of the Bristol Festival of Photography.

This event is open to ALL - you don't have to be a photographer, it is an event everyone can get involved in!

To get involved, ensure your place by preregistering at SHOP before the 15th May. There is an entry fee of £3, purely to cover the costs of developing the film. You will get your prints back after the exhibition.

Nature Walk

SHOP had a guided City Centre Nature Walk last night, led by the very lovely and knowledgeable community gardener, Rob Wicke.

We were fed factlettes aplenty and made to look at the City Centre (and it's 30% canopy) in a very different way. It really was a nourishing and very eye opening walk.

Here's a few snaps:

Everlasting Moments
An intimate portrait of working-class life in early 20th Century Malmo; Maria is the working class mother of seven, married to a violent, drunken, abusive husband. By chance she discovers that she has a talent for photography, an ability to see things in a way that others cannot, and it is the confidence that this gives her which enables her not so much to liberate herself, but to learn to live within the rules of the social milieu into which she was born.

27th May
7.30pm- 9.30pm
Born Into Brothels
A community worker teaches prostitutes' children the art of photography in a red light area of Calcutta. As she befriends them she takes it on herself to 'rescue' them from their fate, their friends and their families by getting them enrolled in private education schools to help them change their destiny. This is a superb film animated by the children themselves as they learn to express themselves, including through the art of photography, their outlooks on life are changed and as a fly on the wall insight into the lives of them and those that surround them.

Nature Month continues...

If you weren't able to make our WorkSHOP: 'Potting for the Home', or our TalkSHOP: 'Introduction to Permaculture', then you missed your chance to meet two very well informed and friendly people running two very inspiring and interesting events.

Rob Wicke who works as a community gardener was busy in our Lounge preparing and potting seeds for his allotment and ready and willing to answer any garden related query or question in SHOP last Saturday. Thank you to him for his time and for not getting any mud on the carpet.

Wednesday 21st saw Nick Soucek Introducing us to a few of the principles and ideas of Permaculture. From 'Three Sisters' and 'Companion' planting techniques to the reality and effectiveness of correctly implemented sustainability.

Sadly next weeks fillum club will be Tara Judahs last one in charge and no doubt Fillum Club will never be the same again. Taras handouts and hidden prizes will be missed but more importantly we will miss Tara herself. So, next Thursday night will be more of a 'leaving fillum club party' and everyone can bring their own short films!

Opening Night for 'Rare Breeds' by Sarah Dennis

SHOP had a lovely evening last night, enjoying looking at all Sarah Dennis's prints and books and toys, newly installed on the walls and surfaces at SHOP.

The projections from Hot Soup looked really gorgeous inside and out as they were back projected onto the slowly darkening Christmas Steps. Inside everyone was making mini-zines under Sarah's expert direction. The results of which can also be seen and added to in SHOP all month

Sarah's exhibition provided the inspiration for Nature Month at SHOP, as her work features many beautiful and fantastical creatures. The exhibition is running all month at SHOP so come and let your heart swell.

Here's some pics from last night:
